As the political landscape continues to shift, the Badger State has emerged as a crucial battleground in the upcoming presidential election.
A recent exclusive AARP survey has revealed a surprising development – former President Donald Trump is leading current President Joe Biden among Wisconsin voters aged 50 and above.
This shift in the political landscape has significant implications for the 2024 race, and it is crucial to understand the factors driving this change.

The AARP survey, conducted by the bipartisan team of Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research, polled 1,052 likely Wisconsin voters between June 28 and July 2, just after the live debate between Biden and Trump. The results paint a compelling picture of the state’s political dynamics.
According to the survey, 52% of Wisconsin voters aged 50 and above say they would support Trump in a head-to-head matchup with Biden, while only 43% would back the current president. This 9-percentage-point lead for Trump among the state’s older voters is a significant development, as this demographic is known to have a strong influence on election outcomes.
When considering voters of all ages, Trump’s lead narrows to 5 percentage points, with 48% supporting the former president and 43% favoring Biden. This suggests that while Trump’s support is strongest among older Wisconsinites, his appeal is not limited to this demographic.
The survey found that 75% of voters aged 50 and above watched the recent debate between Biden and Trump, and 59% of this age group believed that Trump emerged victorious.

Among all voters polled, 56% said Trump won the debate, while only 13% chose Biden. According to Bob Ward, a partner at Fabrizio Ward, the debate “is having an impact” and has “changed this state, not dramatically, but noticeably.”
The AARP survey also examined the Wisconsin Senate race, where the Republican candidate, Eric Hovde, holds a 3-percentage-point lead over the incumbent Democrat, Tammy Baldwin, among voters aged 50 and above. However, the lead reverses when considering voters of all ages, with 50% favoring Baldwin and 45% supporting Hovde.
Wisconsin is a crucial battleground state, with 10 electoral votes up for grabs in the presidential election. In 2020, Biden won the state by a narrow margin of just 0.63 percentage points, underscoring the state’s importance in the national political landscape.
