TAMPA, Fla. – The Bucs will have an entirely new look on offense this season and QBs Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are liking it. Trask has noticed a difference compared to last season.

“There’s just a lotta good energy in the building, Trask said. “Obviously we have the new offensive staff in there and they’re doing a great job of allowing us to play fast. I think that’s going to be a big thing for us this year.”

The Bucs fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich after last season and replaced him with former Seahawks quarterbacks coach Dave Canales. Mayfield likes what he sees but stresses it’s just the very beginning of what he hopes will be a successful run for him since he’s been with three different teams in less than one year.

`We’ve been doing installs so far so we’re in the first period, so Coaches can’t be involved in any of the workouts,” Mayfield said. “So yeah, we’ve gone through the first five installations, so it’s been a good process so far.”

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles says the quarterback competition is wide open, and as of right now, neither Trask nor Mayfield have an advantage. Trask understands he’s going to have to beat out Mayfield in the preseason but really doesn’t concern himself with what Mayfield is doing.

“I mean you always feel competition when you’re in the building,” Trask said. “But most importantly you’ve got to compete with yourself.”

Trask at least already knows most of the Bucs players on offense like wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin while Mayfield is starting to get to know some of them.

“Pretty good foundation, where you get to know guys, ” Mayfield said. “We’re challenging each other and pushing each other where we really see progress.”

Trask and Mayfield played in the Arians Family Foundation Golf Classic this week but not in the same foursome. They did arrive at around the same time having come from One Buc Place where they’re working out and trying to learn the new offense. So does Trask feel like he’s a good fit in Canales’ system?

“A lot of this stuff I think has some carryover from some things I’ve done maybe in college a little bit,” Trask said. “A lot more keepers and outside zones and things like that. So I think it’s a really good switch up for us and I think we’re doing a really good job so far.”

Trask and Mayfield went to the Tampa Bay Lightning vs Toronto Maple Leafs playoff game and are starting to bond.

“I told you guys I just felt it was plain and simple about winning at my opening press conference and it’s been nothing short of that,” Mayfield said. “It’s been great to be around the staff and be around the guys as well. Get to know the offense, get to know each other.”

One of the things Mayfield has learned from his time in the NFL is how important it is to have everyone in the organization have each other’s backs. So far Mayfield is getting that vibe being at One Buc.

“Everybody is on the same page,” Mayfield said. “I don’t think people understand how vital that is for success.”
