Following controversy over M&M’s changing looks, the brand was looking for a spokesperson “America can agree on” for a new Super Bowl ad, and now the cartoon candies will be paused.

As The Free Press readers may recall, in January 2022, the candymaker Mars announced that it would make its multicolored M&Ms more “inclusive.” It’s part of a program Mars calls “Creating a World Where Everyone Feels They Belong.”

“At Mars, we believe that in the world we want tomorrow, society is inclusive. And, as one of our most iconic brands, M&M’S is announcing a new global commitment to create a world where everyone feels they belong,” the company said in a statement. “This year, the brand continues to evolve to reflect the more dynamic, progressive world that we live in.”

Now, Mars has decided to “pause” the cartoon “spokescandies” in exchange for a new face of the brand, Maya Rudolph.

On Tuesday, A&W Restaurants seemingly poked fun at the brand, saying that ‘Rooty the Great Root Bear’ would now be donning denim, as opposed to his bare bear.

In a tweet, A&W said, ” America, let’s talk. “Since 1963, Rooty the Great Root Bear has been our beloved spokesbear. We knew people would notice because he’s literally a 6-foot tall bear wearing an orange sweater. But now we get it – even a mascot’s lack of pants can be polarizing.”

A&W has decided, “Rooty will wear jeans going forward.”

The tweet says Rooty will remain the restaurant chain’s official spokesbear. From now on, he will just be “donning denim.”

But wait for it.

The company tweeted on Wednesday, “Is now a good time to mention this is a joke?” seemingly poking fun at the move by Mars.

Following controversy over M&M’s changing looks, the brand was looking for a spokesperson “America can agree on” for a new Super Bowl ad.

So, fans of Rooty can rest assured that the bear will be bare from the waist down.
