Leon Devince Kerney III, 25, of Avon Park, was arrested yesterday and charged with multiple felonies in connection with a shooting that took place on Peel Street in Avon Park.

HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. – Leon Devince Kerney III, 25, of Avon Park, was arrested yesterday and charged with multiple felonies in connection with a shooting that happened on Peel Street in Avon Park.

Kerney was in an argument with a 24-year-old man just after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, and then used a handgun to fire several shots toward the victim and his 63-year-old grandmother.

Both were able to avoid being shot, although the grandmother was slightly injured when she fell in her attempt to seek cover, according to deputies.

Kerney fled the scene but was soon located and arrested by the Tactical Anti-Crime Team and members of the Uniform Patrol Division.

He was charged with attempted murder, firing a weapon in public, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, improper exhibition of a firearm, and firing a weapon into a vehicle or building.
