Law enforcement efforts to identify the killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson are making swift progress, with authorities releasing two images of a “person of interest” in the case.
Former FBI Special Agent Clint Watts told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Thursday that the suspect’s actions suggest a mix of careful planning and critical errors.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) revealed two photographs, one clearly showing the individual’s face.

The man is “wanted for questioning regarding the Midtown Manhattan homicide on Dec. 4,” according to an NYPD statement. Thompson, 50, was fatally shot at about 6:46 a.m. on Wednesday while leaving the Hilton hotel in Midtown.
Andrea Mitchell noted that the suspect’s face appeared on camera, suggesting he may not be a seasoned professional. Watts agreed.
“That’s right, Andrea. This individual, while they did obviously some reconnaissance, they were very focused on the target, had some weapons training, I would imagine, and were experienced with weapons,” Watts said. “They did make some mistakes by leaving signatures, like going to a Starbucks, probably making some sort of purchase there.”
“NYPD has already done a great job of tracking the individual and coming up with that base, which would probably turn over many more leads. And possibly they know the name of the individual now,” Watts added. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear that in the coming hours, which will allow them to advance on pursuing this individual nationwide if they were to flee. So lots of progress, I think, since this time yesterday. I’m hopeful with this kind of evidence here and the pictures, we’ll start to see more evidence pop up and more tips and leads that are viable for law enforcement to pursue.”

Commissioner Jessica Tisch previously stated that authorities believe the killing was “premeditated, preplanned, targeted.” While investigators have not released a motive, a detective told Fox News Digital that messages were etched onto the bullet casings. The words “deny,” “depose,” and “defend” were reportedly marked on separate rounds, suggesting the killer intended to leave a statement.
As authorities pursue additional tips and review surveillance footage, the pictures and forensic clues—along with the suspect’s potential missteps—are expected to play a crucial role in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
