The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that an informational pamphlet provided to voters deciding on the constitutional right to an abortion may refer to a fetus as an “unborn human being.”

This decision favors Republican lawmakers who argued for the terminology over the objections of the measure’s proponents.

In November, Arizona voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to enshrine the right to an abortion in the state constitution.

This follows the Arizona Secretary of State’s certification on Monday that 577,971 signatures had been submitted, well above the threshold required to place the measure on the ballot.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Democrats have made the protection of abortion rights a central issue in their campaigns, and it remains a significant focus in this year’s elections.
