April marks Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) is launching a comprehensive “Did You Know?” campaign to educate the public and empower those living with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

The campaign will highlight crucial aspects of PD, from statistics and symptoms to personal stories and ways to get involved, ensuring individuals affected by the disease have access to vital resources and support.

The APDA Florida Chapter, through its nationwide network of Chapters and Information & Referral (I&R) Centers, is committed to providing support, education, and research to help individuals with PD live life to the fullest. With approximately 81,000 Floridians living with PD and 90,000 new diagnoses nationwide each year, raising awareness is critical.

“With a new diagnosis every six minutes, nearly 7,200 people in this country will learn they have PD in April alone,” states Desirae Mearns, Program Director, APDA Florida Chapter. “Here in Florida, we are the boots on the ground. From support groups and exercise classes to educational events and access to PD experts, the APDA Florida Chapter is here for every member of our local PD community, working tirelessly to help make their journey more positive.”

Throughout April, the APDA Florida Chapter has planned various programs and events, including the Parkinson’s Live Well Symposium in Boca Raton on April 26th. The organization will also share educational information and resources on social media using the hashtag #DidYouKnow.

Beyond Florida, APDA offers extensive virtual programming and a robust resource library, including materials in Spanish and Mandarin/Simplified Chinese, ensuring accessibility for all. Virtual programs include webinar series like “Dr. Gilbert Hosts,” “Unlocking Strength Within,” and “Let’s Keep Moving with APDA,” as well as virtual exercise and movement classes.

Public support is crucial during Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. Individuals can contribute by raising awareness of PD and donating to support APDA’s critical work, including funding research for better treatments and a cure.
