President Donald Trump

AP: America Got Wealthier And Smarter In The Second Half Of The 2010s, While Trump Was President. Connection?

The U.S. Census Bureau this week released new data that, as the Associated Press reported on Friday, revealed America “grew wealthier, better educated, less impoverished and less transient” during the second half of the last decade.

Former President Donald Trump ran the country for most of the second half of the last decade.

It’s fair to ask if liberals will see a connection.

The AP’s story could almost fuel a Trump campaign commercial. Consider:

Median household income for the nation grew from almost $59,000 from 2011 to 2015 to almost $65,000 during the 2016-20 period.

America’s poverty rate dropped considerably over the last half of the 2010s, declining from 15.5 percent between 2011 and 2015 to 12.8 percent during the 2016 to 2020 period.

As the AP reported, “With the exception of Alaska, where its change wasn’t statistically significant, poverty decreased in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.”

Moreover, home sizes grew. The number of owner-occupied homes that had four or more bedrooms leapt from 29.7 percent to 31.3 percent.

In addition, for some reason, people remained more rooted in the latter part of the 2010s. In the second half, 86.2 percent stayed in the same house, which was up from 85.1 percent. The pandemic likely affected that movement.

Still, they stayed out even as the housing market sizzled, with single-family homes going from a median price of $225,000 when Trump took office to $302,000 the day he left, according to the financial website DQYDJ.com.

On another issue, America became better educated in the second half of the 2010s. Almost one-third of the 25-plus population claimed a bachelor’s degree or higher between 2016 and 2020, relative to 29.8 percent between 2011 and 2015.

Liberals undoubtedly would argue that Trump benefited from momentum set in motion by his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

Except for one thing. Trump reversed or ran counter to almost everything Obama did.

He slashed taxes, gutted regulations, kept inflation capped at 1 percent and promoted energy independence and entrepreneurship that, until the pandemic, hacked unemployment to levels unseen in 50 years, produced record wealth gains among those in the lower one-fifth of earners, cut the proportion of Americans living in poverty and generated record tax revenues for the federal government – with policies that President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress have not overturned, despite promises to do so.

Under the current administration, that seems a lot longer than just two years ago.

  1. instead of “with policies that President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress have not overturned, despite promises to do so.”

    Shouldn’t you have said,

“…with policies that President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress have overturned, despite promises to do not so.”
