A settlement has been reached in a federal lawsuit over book removals in Nassau County, Florida. The agreement will see 36 books, including the controversial children’s book “And Tango Makes Three,” return to school libraries after being removed last year.
The lawsuit filed in May challenged the district’s removal of books amidst a broader debate about censorship in Florida and other states.

“And Tango Makes Three,” which tells the story of two male penguins raising a chick, became a focal point due to its depiction of same-sex parents.
While the district initially claimed the removals were due to lack of circulation or “obscene” content, the settlement acknowledges that “And Tango Makes Three” is appropriate for all ages and has educational value.
The settlement also outlines the return of other notable books like “The Bluest Eye” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” with some restrictions on access for certain titles.

The authors of “And Tango Makes Three” and the parents involved in the lawsuit hailed the settlement as a “major” victory against book censorship. However, a similar lawsuit against the Escambia County school district over the same book remains unresolved.
