A new Gallup survey reveals that Americans’ satisfaction with the quality of healthcare in the United States has plummeted to its lowest point in over two decades. Only 44% of respondents rated the quality of care as “excellent” or “good,” a significant 10% drop from 2020.

The survey, released Friday, paints a grim picture of public perception regarding both healthcare quality and coverage. While the quality of care received a somewhat mixed response, with 38% deeming it “fair,” Americans were even more critical of healthcare coverage.

A mere 28% of those surveyed viewed coverage as “excellent” or “good,” marking a four-percentage point decline compared to the average since 2001.

This decline in confidence comes as healthcare costs continue to soar. In 2022, the U.S. spent a staggering $4.5 trillion on healthcare, representing 17.3% of the nation’s GDP. Despite these high expenditures, the U.S. grapples with issues like obesity and access to affordable care.

The incoming Trump administration has pledged to address these challenges. The President-elect recently nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Both have vowed to prioritize health initiatives, including promoting healthier eating habits and tackling obesity. Kennedy has also expressed concerns about fluoride levels in drinking water.

Whether these initiatives will be enough to improve Americans’ perception of their healthcare system remains to be seen. The Gallup poll, conducted in November 2024 with a margin of error of 4 percentage points, underscores a deep-seated dissatisfaction with the current state of healthcare in the U.S.
