Delta Airlines mechanic George Glezmann, who spent two and a half years in captivity in Afghanistan, has been released and is on his way home, according to a statement from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Glezmann’s release follows the return of Americans Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, who were freed from Afghanistan on the night of President Donald Trump’s inauguration and reunited with their families.

Rubio credited the State of Qatar for its steadfast commitment and diplomatic efforts in securing Glezmann’s release, emphasizing that Qatar has proven to be a reliable partner and trusted mediator in complex international negotiations.

“We extend our deepest appreciation to the State of Qatar, whose steadfast commitment and diplomatic efforts were instrumental in securing George’s release,” said Rubio in a statement.

A Step Forward, but More Americans Remain Detained

While Glezmann’s release marks a positive and constructive step, Rubio and the Trump administration remain focused on securing the freedom of other Americans still detained in Afghanistan and across the globe.

“President Trump will continue his tireless work to free ALL Americans unjustly detained around the world,” the statement concluded.

Glezmann will soon be reunited with his wife, Aleksandra, marking the end of a long and harrowing ordeal. The details of his captivity and the conditions of his release have not been disclosed, but his return signals a renewed U.S. commitment to prioritizing the safe return of detained Americans abroad.
