Every five years, lawmakers in Washington, D.C. review, change and vote on the farm bill. This piece of legislation is crucial to ensure our nation’s food supply remains secure.

Farmers and ranchers are proud to grow and raise the safe, sustainable food, fiber and fuel we all rely on, and the farm bill gives them the tools they need to keep our farms and food supply secure in all seasons.

The farm bill impacts everyone, regardless of if you farm or not. It provides food security and nearly 46.2 million jobs for Americans, protects earth’s natural resources, and addresses nutrition programs to ensure everyone has access to healthy and affordable food.

This year, American Farm Bureau (AFBF) is supporting many changes to the bill to help agriculture thrive in the United States. Farmers and ranchers will look to this bill for protection of their land, livestock and livelihood over the next five years.

“Farming is a difficult and risky business, yet critical to the well-being of our nation. It’s often stated that food security is national security. Few pieces of legislation are more significant than the farm bill when it comes to ensuring our food system is secure. We urge lawmakers to recognize this significance as they consider updating and improving the farm bill,” said the AFBF.

The AFBF supports the following principles to guide development of programs in the next farm bill:

  • Increase baseline funding commitments to farm programs;
  • Maintain a unified farm bill which includes nutrition programs and farm programs together; and
  • Prioritize funding for risk management tools which include both federal crop insurance and commodity programs.

The food and farm bill has been a bipartisan effort in the past.

The 2023 farm bill presents an important opportunity for lawmakers to rise above partisanship and work together again to pass legislation that protects food security for all Americans and the future success of our farmers and ranchers.
