The messaging of race hustlers like Ibram X. Kendi, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Ta-nehisi Coates is resonating.
New York City provides an example.
In East Harlem, on Jan. 9, a gunman entered a Burger King and demanded the clerks hand over the money. He got $100. As he kept threatening the workers, 19-year-old Kristal Bayron-Nieves told him she could not open the cash register.
So, according to the NYPD, the bandit, Winston Glynn, shot and killed her.
“We often hear the term a senseless murder,” NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey told reporters. “That is not a cliché in this case. There was no reason to shoot this young woman. Money had been handed over. She was trying to comply with the gunman’s demands. She was killed for no apparent reason.”
But Glynn may have given a reason.
As detectives led him out of the precinct, according to the New York Post, Glynn shouted at a crowd that had gathered, “Where’s our reparations for four hundred years of f–king slavery!”
“F–k you all!” he yelled, and then added, at the top of his lungs, “America is gonna burn!”
In 2019 for The Atlantic, in which he justified the case for reparations for slavery that ended more 150 years earlier, and even longer ago in the states of the North, Kendi wrote, “Reparations is not my litmus test for presidential candidates. But it is a litmus test for whether a person is being a racist or anti-racist when it comes to one of the most damaging racial inequities of our time, of all American time—the racial wealth gap. To oppose reparations is to be racist. To support reparations is to be anti-racist.”
The irony of the Harlem shooting, of course, is that Glynn is a Jamaican national. Which shows he’s internalized the hustlers’ rhetoric well.
