A Florida man is behind bars thanks to the quick thinking of bank employees who helped Collier County Sheriff’s deputies apprehend him for allegedly stealing over $150,000 from a customer’s account.

39-year-old Eugene Kleyman of Cape Coral was arrested Tuesday at a Fifth Third Bank branch in Golden Gate. He is charged with grand theft over $100,000 and identity theft.

“This is a terrific example of how our business community partners with us to keep Collier County safe,” said Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. “Identity theft and bank fraud are serious crimes that wreak havoc on people’s lives and finances.’’

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Kleyman visited the bank on multiple occasions, posing as an account holder who lived in Georgia. He presented a fake driver’s license with his photo and the victim’s personal information to make fraudulent transactions totaling over $150,000.

Bank employees became suspicious during one of Kleyman’s visits and contacted the real account holder, who confirmed his identity had been stolen.

On Tuesday, Kleyman contacted the bank again to withdraw more funds. Employees scheduled an appointment with him and alerted the CCSO. When Kleyman arrived, deputies were ready and took him into custody.

While detained, Kleyman asked for a cup of water. Deputies found a fake Georgia driver’s license and the victim’s credit card hidden inside the cup. These items were collected as evidence.

Kleyman is currently in the Collier County jail.
