Alabama Sen. Tuberville Rips Dems After “Every Democrat Voted Against” Women’s Sports Protection Bill

In a contentious Senate vote Monday, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act was blocked by a unanimous Democratic opposition, while every Republican senator voted in favor. The bill, aimed at barring biological males from competing in women’s sports, has reignited a fierce debate over fairness, gender, and athletics in America.

Tuberville, a former college football coach, lambasted Democrats during a Republican leadership press conference today, accusing them of undermining women’s sports out of political spite or ideological arrogance.

“Every Republican voted to protect women, every Democrat voted against it,” Tuberville declared, visibly frustrated. “My Democrat colleagues either hate Donald Trump so bad or they just think they know better than everybody else.” The Alabama senator argued that the bill’s failure represents a direct assault on Title IX—the landmark 1972 law ensuring equal opportunities for women in education and sports—which he called “the best thing that’s ever happened to women’s athletics.”

The vote comes on the heels of President Donald Trump’s February 2025 Executive Order banning men from women’s sports, a move hailed by conservatives but criticized as reversible without legislative backing. Tuberville’s bill sought to codify that order into permanent law, but 45 Senate Democrats blocked it from overcoming a filibuster, drawing sharp criticism from Republicans and reigniting a cultural flashpoint from the 2024 election cycle.

The issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports has surged to the forefront of American politics. A recent New York Times poll found that 79% of respondents—including 67% of Democrats—believe male-born athletes should not compete in women’s sports, a 10% jump from a 2023 survey. During the 2024 presidential campaign, the topic emerged as a top voter concern, with advocates arguing that biological males possess inherent physical advantages that undermine fair competition.

Under the Biden administration, more than 900 female athletes reportedly lost medals to male competitors in women’s events, a statistic Tuberville and his allies frequently cite.

“It doesn’t take but one to injure somebody,” Tuberville warned, emphasizing the safety risks he believes are ignored by Democrats. Earlier this year, he also introduced legislation to ban men from women’s U.S. Olympic sports after USA Boxing announced it would allow transgender men to compete against women.

The Senate vote has fueled accusations that Democrats are out of touch with public sentiment, especially after their 2024 election losses. Headlines like “After This Vote, the Dems Show They Really Haven’t Learned Anything From Their 2024 Loss” (Washington Examiner) and “Senate Dems Kill Legislative Effort to Protect Women’s Sports” (Fox News) reflect growing backlash. Critics argue that Democrats’ refusal to support the bill alienates voters who see it as a matter of common sense rather than partisan politics.

Tuberville went further, tying the issue to broader economic concerns. He claimed that Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals—while beneficial for athletes—are disproportionately funneling money away from women’s sports programs. “We’re going to have transgenders in women’s sports, and now we’re saying, ‘We don’t have funding for you,’” he said. “Folks, we are ruining women’s athletics.”

While President Trump’s Executive Order remains in effect, its vulnerability to reversal under a future administration underscores the stakes of Tuberville’s legislative push. “We’re going to get this done one way or another,” Tuberville vowed, predicting that voters will hold Democrats accountable in future elections. “They should be run out of town,” he added, framing the issue as a litmus test for political survival.

Democrats, meanwhile, have largely avoided public comment on the vote, though some have privately signaled discomfort with the party’s unified stance. The White House, which expressed support for Tuberville’s bill ahead of the vote, has not yet indicated whether President Trump will push for another legislative attempt.

As the debate rages on, the fate of women’s sports remains a polarizing fault line—one that shows no signs of fading from the national spotlight.
