Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04) announced last week that he is cosponsoring legislation to ensure that all U.S. flags purchased by the federal government are entirely made in the United States from American materials.

Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) introduced the bill, known as the American-made Flag Act. It aims to close a loophole that currently allows federal agencies to purchase foreign-manufactured American flags.

“The American flag is more than just a symbol—it represents our nation’s values, history, and the sacrifices made by those who have fought to defend our freedoms,” said Congressman Aderholt. “It is only right that the flags flown over our federal buildings, military bases, and other government institutions be made right here in the United States, using American materials and American labor.”

Under existing regulations, federal agencies are not required to purchase flags that are 100% made in the U.S., meaning taxpayer dollars can be used to buy flags manufactured overseas. The American-made Flag Act would mandate that all American flags purchased by the federal government be entirely produced domestically, from the fabric to the stitching.

“This legislation is a commonsense step in putting American manufacturing first,” Aderholt continued. “We have the ability and the resources to produce our own flags without relying on imports, and we should be doing everything we can to support American workers and industries.”

The American-made Flag Act has garnered bipartisan support as it moves through the legislative process.

The bill is currently under review in the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, where lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have expressed interest in advancing the proposal.
