A 54-year-old Alabama man has been sentenced to life in prison for the horrific abuse of his girlfriend’s three young children.

Howard Anderson received three life sentences for aggravated child abuse and an additional 60 years for chemical endangerment of a child. The sentencing follows his conviction last month on multiple charges related to the abuse.

The victims, all under the age of 12, testified at Anderson’s trial about the horrific abuse they endured. They reportedly viewed Anderson as a father figure, even referring to him as “dad.” However, Anderson regularly subjected them to physical and emotional abuse, including choking, beatings, attempted drowning, and even burning them with a blowtorch.

The children’s mother, Ashleigh Ableman, pleaded guilty in June to related charges and is currently serving a five-year prison sentence. According to reports, Ableman also physically abused her children and exposed the youngest to methamphetamine.

“To hear these children testify to the horrific beatings, chokings, burns, and drowning attempts at the hands of this monster is gut-wrenching,” said Dale County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Caroline Jackson. “No child should ever have to experience what happened in this case.”

Sheriff Mason Bynum added, “These young children have been waiting for this day for a long time. They have lived in hell at the hands of Ashleigh Ableman and Howard Anderson.”

The abuse came to light thanks to a Good Samaritan who reported their suspicions to law enforcement, ultimately leading to the arrests of Anderson and Ableman.

This case highlights the devastating impact of child abuse and the importance of reporting any suspected abuse to authorities. The lengthy sentence imposed on Anderson ensures that he will never again be able to harm a child.
