A 60-year-old Alabama doctor, Janaki Earla, received a 15-year sentence this week after pleading guilty to attempting to meet an underage patient for sex and offering to be her “sugar daddy.”

Earla will serve three years in prison followed by three years of probation. Violating probation could result in the remainder of his 15-year sentence being reinstated. Additionally, he will be deported from the US to his home country of India after his release.

The victim, a 17-year-old patient of Earla’s, reported inappropriate behavior during an examination on October 4, 2022. Earla obtained her phone number and sent her suggestive messages.

Blount County investigators, posing as the victim, communicated with Earla. He propositioned her to be his “sugar baby” and expressed explicit desires. They arranged a meeting at a hotel, where Earla was arrested upon arrival.

Earla pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and first-degree human trafficking. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of reporting any inappropriate behavior by healthcare professionals.
