The picture of who would control the Senate became clear on Saturday after Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada defeated Republican Adam Laxalt to win re-election.
This win puts her party over the threshold to maintain Senate control.
This keeps the path open for Biden to have his judicial and administrative appointments confirmed, even if the Republicans take the House majority.
Control of the US House still hangs in the balance and may not be determined for some time with ballots left to be counted in closely contested races in California, as well as other states.
On Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said at a press conference, “The race is now called in Arizona and Nevada. Democrats will have a majority in the Senate and I will once again be Majority Leader. This election is a victory. A victory and a vindication for Democrats, our agenda for America, and for the American people, There are three things that helped the Senate secure the majority. One, our terrific candidates, two, our agenda and our accomplishments and three the American people rejected, the anti-democratic extremist MAGA Republicans.”
