The legal battle between Florida State University and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) escalates as the conference seeks intervention from the Florida Supreme Court.
This latest development comes after the ACC suffered a setback in its attempt to halt a lawsuit filed by FSU challenging the conference’s media rights agreement and potential exit fees.
The dispute began in December 2023 with dueling lawsuits filed by both parties. The ACC filed its lawsuit in North Carolina, while FSU filed its case in Leon County Circuit Court.

The core issue revolves around FSU’s potential desire to leave the ACC and the associated financial implications, with the university contending that the conference’s media rights deal is hindering its revenue potential.
The ACC has argued that since its North Carolina lawsuit was filed first, the Florida case should be put on hold pending the resolution of the North Carolina case. However, Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper rejected the ACC’s request for a stay in June.
Following this, the ACC sought relief from the 1st District Court of Appeal, but a three-judge panel denied their petition in November. Undeterred, the conference filed a notice on Friday, January 17th, indicating its intent to appeal to the Florida Supreme Court. This move signifies the ACC’s determination to prevent the Florida lawsuit from proceeding and to maintain control over the legal battleground.
