AAA forecasts a surge in travel for the upcoming Independence Day holiday, with a record-breaking 70.9 million Americans expected to travel 50 miles or more from home, including 4.5 million Floridians. This represents a 3.5 million increase over last year’s figures.
“The summer travel season is off to a hot start and we expect to set new travel records on the road and in the sky during the week of Independence Day,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “There will be 3.5 million more travelers than last year. That means even more people at airports and popular attractions like beaches, lakes, and theme parks.”
Economic Factors Fueling Travel Growth
Despite concerns about inflation, a rise in consumer confidence, wages, and sustained consumer spending are driving the travel boom. While gas prices have fluctuated, they are currently lower than the same period last year, further encouraging road trips.
Key Travel Period and Forecast Highlights
AAA’s Independence Day travel forecast covers a 9-day period from Saturday, June 29th to Sunday, July 7th. The prediction encompasses domestic trips of 50 miles or more and highlights the following trends:
- Increased Consumer Spending: Consumer spending is expected to rise by 5.5% compared to last year.
- Modest GDP Growth: Real GDP growth is projected to be 2.5% higher than the previous year.
- Growing Consumer Confidence: Consumer confidence has seen an uptick in May after a steady decline since January.
- Fluctuating Gas Prices: While gas prices were higher in May compared to last year, they have decreased in June, averaging $3.32 per gallon.
As travelers prepare for their Independence Day getaways, AAA advises planning and booking early to secure the best rates and availability for flights, accommodations, and rental cars.
