With the frequency of summertime downpours increasing, especially during rush hour, AAA is reminding Florida drivers of essential safety precautions.
“While strong downpours can limit visibility, the wet pavement can act as a slip and slide for your car,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Pay close attention to afternoon weather reports and adjust your drive time so you’re not on the road when it rains. If you can’t adjust your drive time, be sure to adjust your driving habits while driving during or after the storm.”
Key Tips for Driving in the Rain:
- Turn on headlights: Enhance visibility for yourself and others.
- Slow down: Wet roads reduce traction, even at lower speeds.
- Increase following distance: Allow more time for braking.
- Avoid cruise control: Maintain better control of the vehicle.
- Prevent hydroplaning: Drive in tire tracks of the vehicle ahead, ease off the accelerator near puddles, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
- Never drive through standing water: Hidden hazards can lurk beneath.

Additional Safety Measures:
- Low visibility: Avoid using hazard lights while driving, as they can mislead other drivers. Seek shelter in safe locations like parking lots or exit the interstate if necessary.
- Stalled vehicle in rising water: Do not attempt to restart the engine. Exit immediately and seek higher ground.
- Unattended vehicle surrounded by water: Do not start the engine or open doors until the water level subsides. Remove interior water with a wet vac.
Proactive Measures:
- Flood-prone areas: Park vehicles in garages or elevated areas during severe weather.
- Vehicle damage: Document damage, contact insurance, have the vehicle towed to a mechanic, and get a thorough inspection before driving again.
- Insurance coverage: Comprehensive auto insurance covers flood damage.
Vehicle Maintenance:
Ensure optimal performance in wet conditions by checking:
- Windshield wipers: Replace worn or ineffective wipers.
- Lights: Verify all lights function correctly.
- Tires: Maintain proper tread depth and inflation pressure.
By following these safety tips and maintaining their vehicles, Florida drivers can navigate the rainy season more safely.
