A Brief History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, commemorates the end of World War I. On November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, an armistice was signed, effectively ending the war.
In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day, honoring those who served in the Great War. It wasn’t until 1938 that Congress made Armistice Day a federal holiday.
However, as the nation experienced further wars, the focus of the holiday began to shift. In 1954, Congress passed a law to honor all American veterans, not just those of World War I.
This marked the official renaming of Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
