According to the City of Kettering Police Department, an investigation was immediately launched to determine the victim’s identity and the circumstances surrounding this macabre find.
Through forensic work, the authorities were able to identify the deceased as 75-year-old Edgar Keiter Sr., a resident of Kettering, Ohio. The identification was made possible by a unique identifier – a serial number from a knee replacement surgery found on one of the recovered limbs.
The discovery of Keiter Sr.’s severed legs was just the beginning of a complex and disturbing case. Further investigation led the authorities to a storage unit in Trotwood, where the rest of Keiter Sr.’s remains were found.
The evidence painted a chilling picture – Keiter Sr. had been the victim of a heinous crime, with his body dismembered and scattered across multiple locations.
As the investigation deepened, the spotlight turned to Keiter Sr.’s own son, Edgar Keiter Jr. The 52-year-old Dayton resident quickly became the prime suspect in the case, with authorities alleging that he was responsible for the abuse of his father’s corpse and the tampering of evidence.
On May 10th, a Montgomery County Grand Jury indicted Edgar Keiter Jr. on charges of gross abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and theft. The suspect was arraigned in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, where he entered a plea of not guilty and was held on a $1 million bond.
Edgar Keiter Jr. had a history of legal troubles, with multiple convictions for aggravated drug possession in Montgomery County. He had also been previously convicted of resisting arrest and obstructing official business in Kettering Municipal Court.
The investigation also revealed that the victim, Edgar Keiter Sr., had his own criminal record. In 2010, he was convicted of rape and gross sexual imposition against a child under the age of 13, for which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
