Florida Teens, Parents Charged After Child Takes Gun From Dresser Drawer, Loans It To Friend

Two Florida teens and some parents were arrested after one teen posted selfies online of himself with a gun.

According to investigators, on Monday, December 6, 2021, the Hardee County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that David Howell, 14, posted a “selfie” of himself possessing a firearm.

Deputies say that school officials searched David Howell’s belongings and did not locate a gun. Detectives contacted David Howell at his residence and questioned him regarding the photograph.

Howell informed Detectives that he was in possession of a BB gun, and it was discarded in a wooded area near his home.

Detectives could not locate the firearm in the wooded area and questioned Howell further.

Investigators say that Howell then admitted that the firearm was not in the woods and was returned to Julian Solis, and it could be located at his home.

Detectives responded to the residence of Julian Solis and met with him and his parents.

Detectives learned that David Howell asked Julian Solis if he could borrow a firearm for the weekend.

Julian Solis, 12, took possession of a Taurus 9mm from his parent’s dresser drawer and met David Howell inside a school restroom on Friday, December 3, 2021, where he gave him the firearm.

The firearm was returned to Julian Solis on Monday, December 6, 2021, and placed back inside his parent’s dresser drawer.

The following individuals were arrested:

  • David Howell (age 14) – Possession of a firearm on school property (F3)
  • Julian Solis (age 12) – Possession of a firearm on school property (F3)

Both juveniles are currently in the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Julian Solis’ parents, Mr. Javier Solis and Erica Solis, were charged with failing to secure a firearm (M2).

The investigation is ongoing at this time and we will update this story when more details are released.
