Republican Rep. Don Bacon reportedly admitted that he voted for President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion “infrastructure” plan last week in order to improve his chances of re-election in a purple district, The Free Press reported Monday.
Now, it’s a Democrat’s turn to lift a finger into the political breeze.
On Friday, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, announced that she was rejecting Biden’s tyrannical vaccine mandate.
“Yesterday, I reviewed the new vaccine mandate from the Biden Administration. While I appreciate the intention to keep people safe, a goal I share, I don’t believe this directive is the correct, or the most effective, solution for Kansas,” Kelly said in a statement.
“States have been leading the fight against COVID-19 from the start of the pandemic. It is too late to impose a federal standard now that we have already developed systems and strategies that are tailored for our specific needs,” she added.
“I will seek a resolution that continues to recognize the uniqueness of our state and builds on our ongoing efforts to combat a once-in-a-century crisis.”
Kelly is up for re-election in 2022.
She apparently feels the need to tread lightly with Biden’s overreach because she can read a map.
Kelly won in 2018 with only 48 percent of the vote, and despite winning just nine of the state’s 105 counties.
Kelly defeated Republican Kris Kobach who, despite being a staunch supporter of then-President Donald Trump, was seen as too mercurial by many in his party. Several prominent Republicans in Kansas, including three former GOP governors, endorsed Kelly.
Now, however, Kelly appears to see where her constituents are on the Biden mandates – and her own electoral prospects.
In its article on her comments, The Kansas City Star called Kelly “one of the most vulnerable incumbent governors in the nation,” and as such she “appears to be sprinting away from President Joe Biden.”
Not only did she come out against the mandate three days after Republicans swept the top state offices in Virginia, she also was faced with the fact that Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, a Republican and a potential 2022 foe, has joined numerous other GOP attorneys general in suing the Biden administration over the mandate.
Joanna Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the Republican Governors Association, told the Star, “The only reason she is feigning disapproval now is because she realizes that her unconditional loyalty to Biden and national Democrats is an albatross around her neck. It’s too little too late.”
