Sometimes you must wonder who is in charge of President Joe Biden’s communications – and wonder if a group of chimps tapping randomly on keyboards could do a better job.
Biden visited a daycare center in Connecticut on Friday, where he not only said “I like kids better than people,” he hammered home the need to get more parents working – specifically mothers.
“How can we compete in a world if millions of American parents, especially moms, can’t be part of the workforce?” Biden said during the visit, according to Breitbart News. “Because they can’t afford the cost of child care or elder care?”
As it happened, that same day, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg conducted a blitz on liberal media to defend why he was mostly invisible for the past two months while off on paternity leave.
Buttigieg, who is gay, and his spouse adopted twin infants in early September.
Until the last few days, he had been far from the public eye as multiple crises began to sprout.
Dozens of cargo ships have been idled at sea awaiting entry to American ports, which in turn has created massive supply-chain issues.
Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines last weekend grounded more than 2,000 flights, stranding tens of thousands of passengers in the process, over an apparent employee blowback to a company COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
The authoritarian mandate is Biden’s key tactic to battle COVID, yet the CEOs of both Southwest and Delta have condemned it.
In the last few days, news reports have noted that the trucking industry faces a major shortage of drivers – leading some to speculate that the supply-chain matters would still not be resolved even if those ships could reach port.
And a recent report suggested that Canada and Michigan are headed toward a diplomatic standoff because Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants to shut a pipeline a Canadian oil company has used for decades to funnel oil to an Ontario refinery. Canadian officials moved to invoke a 44-year-old treaty with the U.S. that says the flow of oil cannot be interrupted.
Over in Congress, meanwhile, lawmakers have been squabbling over Biden’s ultra-expensive infrastructure bill, with left-wing Democrats fighting both Republicans and not-as-liberal members of their own party.
And amid all this, the nation’s transportation chief has been a stay-at-home dad for the last eight weeks.
After Fox News’ Tucker Carlson lit into Buttigieg for his extended leave, questioning whether he was learning how to breastfeed.
A snippy Buttigieg said on MSNBC, “I guess he just doesn’t understand the concept of bottle feeding, let alone the concept of paternity leave. But what’s really strange is that, you know, this is from a side of the aisle that used to claim the mantle of being pro-family.”
Some on the “pro-family” side were not cutting Buttigieg slack.
Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said last week, “Cargo boats are unable to dock and shelves are sitting empty. Pete needs to either get back to work or leave the Department of Transportation. It’s time to put American families first.”
GOP Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas tweeted, “Pete Buttigieg is completely unqualified to handle the supply chain crisis. The only reason he’s the Secretary of Transportation is because he endorsed Joe Biden.”
