America’s top military leader apparently will face no consequences after undermining the president by promising to notify enemies of potential attacks and pledging to promote racist Critical Race Theory politics throughout the ranks.
But a corporal who appeared on stage with a former president is now under investigation for his political leanings.
The military website Task & Purpose reported Thursday that U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Hunter Clark is being investigated after appearing at former Donald Trump’s rally in Georgia last weekend.
Clark served in Kabul last month. He pulled security at the airport during President Joe Biden’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in 13 troops, mostly Marines, being killed in a terrorist attack.
On Saturday, Clark went on stage with Trump at the 45th president’s Save America rally in Perry, Georgia. Clark was not in uniform, and stood with Trump for less than a minute, according to Task & Purpose.
He introduced himself as the Marine who grabbed an infant from an Afghan woman and pulled the baby over the razor wire.
“It’s definitely probably one of the greatest things I’ve done in my entire life,” Clark told the crowd. “I just want to thank all the support from all y’all. It really means a lot and I’m glad to be home now.”
A spokesman for Clark’s unit told the website that Clark was not the baby-hoisting Marine in the video that went viral on Aug. 19.
Still, the spokesman acknowledged that there were several incidents of Afghans passing children to Marines, and it wasn’t clear what incident Clark referred to.
Nonetheless, Capt. Kelton Cochran, the spokesman for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, told Task & Purpose that the unit “has initiated a command investigation regarding LCpl Hunter Clark’s attendance at the event last weekend to determine if any DoD policies were violated. Any details pertaining to this incident are not releasable while the investigation is being conducted.”
The website noted that Cochran did not offer what policies Clark supposedly violated. Defense Department regulations forbid active-duty troops from speaking at partisan political events, “including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.”
But Task & Purpose noted that besides not being in uniform, Clark did not promote any specific candidate or cause, and did not urge military personnel to do that. He also did not appear on stage until Trump summoned him from the crowd.
