What will liberals make of this?
On Monday evening, Black Lives Matter activists in New York City led a protest of an Italian restaurant in Manhattan over an alleged racial injustice.
The restaurant’s offense: following the city’s mandate to force patrons to prove they have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
The issue ignited last week when three black women from Texas attempted to enter Carmine’s restaurant.
According to media reports, the hostess reminded them they had to be vaccinated in order to eat there, per a new city policy. She then questioned the validity of the documents they showed.
The women burst into a rage, and then repeatedly punched the hostess before other employees broke up the fracas.
The patrons – Kaeita Nkeenge Rankin, Tyonnie Keshay Rankin, and Sally Rechelle Lewis — were detained and given desk appearance tickets on an assault charge. They were soon released. The hostess reportedly sustained a concussion and was rattled, but declined a trip to the hospital.
The restaurant issued a statement, saying, “It’s a shocking and tragic situation when one of our valued employees is assaulted for doing their job — as required by city policies — and trying to make a living.”
Carmine’s owner, Jeffrey Bank, who called the attack “inexcusable” and “ridiculous,” noted that the restaurant will now post a security guard at the g entrance. “My employees are freaked out,” Bank told the media. “It’s not fair.”
On Monday, the BLM activists demonstrated in front of Carmine’s and shouted “Cancel Carmine’s.”
Patch.com reported, “Multiple speakers mentioned that the vaccine mandate gives police a lopsided incentive to target Black people since the demographic is not as vaccinated as other groups.”
One speaker said, “We will not sit by and allow you to use this pandemic, vaccine mandate, and masks, as reasons to throw us in prison.”
According to The Blaze, Hawk Newsome, founder of the BLM Greater New York Chapter, said during the protest, “Listen, vaccine is a choice, it’s a choice. You shouldn’t exclude people from everyday activities because they choose not to engage in something they have every reason to doubt.”
A lawyer for the women said the hostess, who is Asian-American, used a racial slur and was “condescending” toward them in asking for vaccination proof.
Carmine’s denied that, noting that other people in their party were admitted to the restaurant. It added in a statement, “None of the attackers mentioned anything about race to our managers, staff, or the police who arrested them, and the Texas criminal defense lawyer’s false assertion otherwise is a deeply cynical ploy to try to excuse wanton violence.”
The incident at Carmine’s underscores the inherent conflict between two major priorities for liberals: racial justice and pushing unvaccinated people to margins of society in order to shame them into getting the jab.
As Newsome noted, getting the vaccine is a choice. In large numbers, black Americans are not opting for that choice. Yet the media continue to suggest it’s only right-wingers who refuse the shot. The Carmine’s brawl reflects a reality that the media declines to acknowledge.
