Go Figure: The Designer Of AOC’s “Tax The Rich” Gown Owes Tens Of Thousands In Back Taxes

When radical Democratic U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez strutted into a swanky benefit ball last week clad in her infamous “Tax the Rich” gown, who knew the message adoring that wearable conversation piece actually applied to its designer.

In promoting both the dress and her envy-dripping cause, AOC noted that the gown was crafted by an immigrant woman of color.

Of course, AOC declined to report that the dressmaker, Aurora James, had immigrated all the way from Canada. She also failed to mention that James is among the very uber-wealthy that AOC hoped to scold with her gown.

Now, the New York Post reports that James is a “notorious tax deadbeat with unpaid debts dogging her in multiple states.”

James’ company, Cultural Brokerage Agency, which is the parent company of her designer brand, Brother Vellies, as AOC noted the other night, has “racked up three open tax warrants in New York state for failing to withhold income taxes from employees’ paychecks totaling $14,798,” the Post reported on Sunday, ciuting records of the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

The lapsed debts were pre-pandemic, occurring in 2018 and 2019. Overall, the Post noted, the state has slapped James’ company 15 total tax warrants in the past six years.

The Post added, “The company got into a deeper hole with the feds. Between April 2018 and April 2019, the Internal Revenue Service placed six federal liens on Cultural Brokerage Agency totaling $103,220. The liens specifically cite the company’s failure to remit employee payroll taxes.”

James’ firm also has not paid its workers’ compensation insurance.

“Over the years Cultural Brokerage Agency has also faced multiple legal challenges as a result of habitual nonpayment of worker benefits,” the Post reported.

“In October 2019 the state Worker’s Compensation Board slapped the company with a $17,000 fine for not carrying worker’s-comp insurance between March 2017 and February 2018. The company currently owes $62,722 and no payments have been received to date.”

And it gets better. The Post explains why AOC and the rest of The Squad supported the CDC’s rent moratorium.

“James is also an alleged rent deadbeat, records show. In August 2020, James’ landlord filed papers to evict Brother Vellies from their location at 71 Franklin St. in Brooklyn, as well as demanding more than $25,000 plus interest for staying beyond the end of her lease. The case was settled,” according to the Post. “She was sued by a previous landlord in February 2018 for more than $5,000 in unpaid rent at her shop’s old address at 209 West 38th Street in Manhattan.”

Meanwhile, a year ago James acquired a $1.6-million, 7,100-square-foot home in Los Angeles. And she’s already delinquent in her property taxes, owing LA County roughly $2,500.

On top of that, some of James’ former employees describe her as a tyrannical boss who ran a sweatshop and a hostile work environment.
