As predictable as the sun rising in the east, once Democrats gain power they go to the guns – your guns.
This week, the House passed two bills designed to rein in gun ownership. One would impose background checks on all firearms sales, including private ones and transfers, while the other lengthens the FBI background check on gun purchases from three days to 10, and yet allow the agency to withhold the findings indefinitely.
One critic, Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, denounced how Speaker Nancy Pelosi conducted business on a vital constitutional issue
“Democrats brought two oppressive gun control bills to the floor this week, once again bypassing the normal committee process,” Gaetz said in a statement.
“I voted against both of the Democrats’ gun control bills, because law-abiding Americans should not be presumed guilty or suspicious merely because they are gun owners. The burdens House Democrats would impose on gun owners are neither rational nor constitutional. If Democrats are serious about curbing gun violence, they will join me in calling for an end to gun-free zones, which continue to be targeted by the deranged.”
Gaetz added, “Two more bills with no mark-up and extremely limited debate; two more bills where Republican amendments were summarily rejected. This is no way to govern.
But more anti-gun activity may be in store.
California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein this week introduced a ban on 205 specific “military-style assault weapons.”
Feinstein’s measure grandfathers in currently owned weapons, but would give states money for “buyback” schemes and impose restrictions on firearms with magazines capable of holding more than 10 bullets.
In a statement, the Democrat said, “It’s been 17 years since the original Assault Weapons Ban expired, and the plague of gun violence continues to grow in this country.
“To be clear, this bill saves lives. When it was in place from 1994-2004, gun massacres declined by 37 percent compared with the decade before. After the ban expired, the number of massacres rose by 183 percent. We’re now seeing a rise in domestic terrorism, and military-style assault weapons are increasingly becoming the guns of choice for these dangerous groups. I’m hopeful that with the new administration and Democratic control of the Senate, we can finally pass commonsense gun reforms to remove these deadly weapons from our communities.”
Feinstein conveniently fails to mention that a few key points.
First, the original “assault weapons” ban expired because research showed that it didn’t work. According to the U.S Bureau of Justice Statistics, killers used rifles, shotguns, and “other” rifles, such as “assault” weapons, to commit 17.3 percent of all gun-related homicides. In 2004, that ratio was up to 22 percent.
In 2019, former President Bill Clinton said, After (the assault weapons ban) passed in 1994, there was a big drop in mass shooting deaths. When the ban expired, they rose again. ‘We must act now.’
Even left-wing “fact-checker” Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post gave that claim to two Pinocchios for overstating the effectiveness of the ban.
In addition, Feinstein and other gun-grabbers won’t mention how nearly two-thirds of gun deaths are actually suicides; that for killers who use guns, pistols are the weapon of choice about 70 percent of the time; and that the spike in gun violence last year was attributable to anti-police, soft-on-crime policies pushed in major cities that are run by Democrats.
But why let facts stand in the way of good narrative, especially when yo have the power to ram this through.
