Canceled: High School Coach Flagged for Criticizing Left-Wing Exercise Plan

A high school football coach in Massachusetts was canned in January for complaining about the left-wing nature of the curriculum at his daughter’s middle school.

Now he’s suing.

For the last 10 years, Daniel Flynn was the head coach at Dedham High School, where had graduated. His children attended public schools in the same school district.

According to court records, his daughter, a seventh-grader, was supposed to take history class on ancient civilizations, per state guidelines.

Instead, the course materials featured lessons on “issues of race, gender, stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, and politics, among others.”

In one assignment, court documents state, the history teacher used materials that “labeled all police officers as risks to all black people and all black males as risks to white people.” The teacher also used a “cartoon character of herself” wearing a Black Lives Matter T-shirt, which Flynn interpreted as her expressing support for BLM.

Flynn shared his concerns with other parents, many of whom agreed with him, in an email that went to the school system’s superintendent and eventually made its way to the school board.

In the email, Flynn complained that the superintendent failed “to make sure the Dedham teachers conduct themselves as professionals and to teach the courses objectively and without biased opinions.”

He also argued “the real men and women in the world are the ones who have the ability to compromise, especially in extremely controversial situations. Compromise allows people to experience life as a team. This is where unity brings individual pride together and relationships begin to strengthen.”

“If the teacher teaches the course objectively and removes the BLM logo from the class, people will soon get over the fact that the class was purposely created without notifying parents and without having a visible course curriculum, syllabus, and learning objective. Apparently, it does not mean much to him that the Dedham Public School System is losing two wonderful students.”

Eventually, the superintendent, joined in a meeting with Flynn by the principal and athletic director at his school, told him he was fired. Before Flynn got home from that meeting, the school system sent an email saying the following:

“We are also writing today and are sorry to inform you that Dave Flynn will not be reappointed as the Head Coach of Dedham High School football. We met with Mr. Flynn today because he has expressed significant philosophical differences with the direction, goals, and values of the school district. Due to these differences, we felt it best to seek different leadership for the program at this time.”

Flynn, with the help of the conservative legal group Judicial Watch, has sued, claiming the school system violated his First Amendment rights.
