SARASOTA, Fla. – The Sarasota Police Department is continuing an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday, February 6, 2021, in the 2400 block of Bay Street, Sarasota.
The officer involved was not hurt. New information includes the name of the suspect being released. The name of the victim is being withheld under Marsy’s Law. This case remains an active and ongoing investigation.
Just before 6:30 p.m., a patrol officer from the Sarasota Police Department responded to the 2400 block of Bay Street for a call for service after witnesses called 911 to report a woman screaming and shots fired in the area.
The officer, upon arrival, encountered Scott Tiati, 52, of Sarasota, armed with a firearm. Preliminary information suggests that Tiati shot and killed an adult female, in front of the officer as the officer was walking up to the home for the call for service.
Tiati and the woman did know one another. Preliminary information suggests the victim encountered Tiati in the 2400 block of Bay Street. During the encounter, Tiati shot the woman and her dog, killing them both. The officer fired his duty weapon.
Tiati died but it remains unknown if he was killed by the officer or a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Per Sarasota Police Department policy, the patrol officer who fired their duty weapon has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
The last officer-involved shooting for the Sarasota Police Department happened in April 2018.
