Originally released in 2013 for the Wii U, Super Mario 3D World was a solid platformer that introduced a new power-up to keep it interesting: a cat suit. Mario and his pals could now climb walls, smack enemies with their paws, and even climb up the flagpole at the end of each level.
The title was critically acclaimed but failed to find a strong audience due to poor console sales, which was due to the marketing and timing of the release of the Wii U console.
Seeing a second chance to let Super Mario 3D World shine, Nintendo decided to rerelease the game on the Nintendo Switch in order to usher in a new generation of gamers to the whimsy of cat Mario and his antics.
Adding the mystery DLC called Bowser’s Fury to the package was a cherry on top, but gamers were anxious to know what exactly the DLC would entail. Luckily, we got our first look at the content in a brand new trailer released today. I can personally verify that Nintendo’s new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a knockout.
Introducing Bowser Jr. with his iconic paintbrush from Super Mario Sunshine as a companion character is one thing, but delivering an amazingly large and furious Bowser that puts Giga Bowser to shame is an entirely different story altogether.
It looks like Nintendo borrowed a bit from Godzilla and Dragon Ball Z for inspiration as the trailer shows Cat Mario growing to an epic size in order to fight this new, very pissed version of the iconic boss Bowser.
Speculation can be made that Bowser Jr. is along for the ride to help Mario calm his big bad dad down, but all we were given was a bit of footage showing Bowser Jr. using his paintbrush and clown car to whack enemies, not whether or not he’s actually a playable character.
The footage also showcases a new perspective to the gameplay from the original, at least in this new area for the DLC. It seems like this game will be more of an open-world title, similar to 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey, which is easily one of the best Mario games, and certainly one of the Switch’s most beloved titles.
Will we see the resurrection of some of the bad guys and powers from Super Mario Sunshine? Will cat Mario have to defeat enormous fleas? We won’t have to wait long to answer these and many other questions, as Super Mario 3D World releases for the Nintendo Switch on February 12, 2021.
