Former South Bend mayor and opponent in the presidential primaries, Pete Buttigieg, has been picked to lead the US Transportation Department. If confirmed, the 38-year-old will be Biden’s youngest pick and the first openly gay person for a Cabinet position.
Buttigieg dropped out of the race in March and endorsed Biden along with other moderate Democrats. Leading the Transportation Department, he is expected to play a prominent role in the incoming Biden administration’s push to rebuild the nation’s road and bridge infrastructure.
Buttigieg was the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana from January 2012 to January 2020, and served in the War in Afghanistan in 2014.
Buttigieg is a graduate of Harvard College and Oxford University, attending the latter on a Rhodes Scholarship. He was a consultant at the management consulting firm McKinsey from 2007 to 2010. From 2009 to 2017, he was an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant. He was mobilized and deployed to Afghanistan for seven months in 2014.
Buttigieg became the first openly gay person to launch a major presidential campaign.
