Prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are facing renewed attention for their past support of tariff policies, which is drawing comparisons to those recently implemented by the Trump administration as part of its “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs.
On Wednesday, Pelosi criticized President Trump’s tariff strategy on X, stating, “Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs will cause chaos in our economy, raise prices for consumers and hurt hardworking American families. This is not a strategy — it’s the largest tax hike on the American people in history.”
Pelosi’s comments came amidst economic adjustments following the implementation of Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. While these tariffs have led to market volatility and transitional disruptions, the White House has defended them as crucial for long-term economic restructuring and domestic recovery.

However, a video clip from 1996, shared by Trump’s rapid response team on X, shows Pelosi expressing support for reciprocal trade measures. In the footage, she criticizes Chinese tariffs on American goods, echoing Trump’s concerns about the U.S.-China trade imbalance.

Pelosi is not the only Democrat whose past stances on tariffs are being revisited.
A 2008 clip, also aired by Fox, features Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, advocating for bringing jobs back from overseas, including China. This stance aligns with Trump’s tariff-based approach aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign labor. In the speech, which appears to be from Sanders’ 2008 presidential campaign, he called for action to reverse trade practices that he argued had harmed American workers.
Additionally, reports indicate that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed support for Trump’s proposal to impose tariffs on China in 2018.

However, Schumer has reportedly changed his position, recently criticizing Trump for initiating a “financial forest fire” and arguing that the tariffs would increase costs for consumers.
The disparity between these earlier statements and current Democratic messaging has been widely circulated online in the wake of “Liberation Day.” Supporters of the Trump administration contend that these apparent policy reversals reveal a pattern of partisan opposition to Trump, rather than genuine disagreement with the merits of the policies.
President Trump has maintained a consistent stance in support of reciprocal tariffs, arguing their necessity to protect American workers and rectify imbalances in global trade.

While acknowledging the economic challenges associated with implementing tariffs, his administration has defended them as a component of a larger economic recovery strategy.
The resurfacing of these earlier statements contributes to the ongoing debate about the effectiveness and consistency of Democratic economic messaging during the ongoing economic adjustments following the 2024 election.
