Tampa Man Gets More Than 7 Years In Prison For Felon Firearm Possession

TAMPA, Fla. – Chamberlain Vaunshay Chaney, 34, of Tampa, has been sentenced to seven years and six months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and violating the terms of his supervised release.

U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland, sitting by designation from the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota, handed down the sentence. Chaney was also ordered to forfeit a Smith & Wesson 9mm firearm, which was recovered during his arrest.

Chaney had previously pleaded guilty to the charges on November 20, 2024.

According to court documents, on February 8, 2024, officers from the Tampa Police Department (TPD) Fugitive Task Force, acting on an active arrest warrant, observed Chaney leaving a Tampa motel room and entering a vehicle. Officers then apprehended him.

A subsequent search of Chaney and his vehicle resulted in the recovery of a firearm from under the driver’s seat. At the time of his arrest, Chaney had prior state and federal felony convictions, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2011 and felon in possession of a firearm in 2017.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tampa Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Maria Guzman prosecuted the case.
