Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan, a Minnesota resident, was arrested Thursday and charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically ISIS.

According to a criminal complaint, Hassan made two unsuccessful attempts in December 2024 to travel from Minnesota to Somalia to join ISIS. He allegedly tried to disguise his intentions by claiming he was visiting family, despite having no relatives in Somalia. He was found to be carrying his birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and high school diploma.

The FBI’s investigation revealed that Hassan had publicly expressed support for ISIS on social media and communicated with a Facebook account linked to the Manjaniq Media Center, an ISIS media organization that encourages individuals to join the terrorist group.

Disturbingly, the investigation also found that Hassan praised Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the perpetrator of the ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 1st, 2025. This connection highlights the potential reach of extremist ideologies and the importance of vigilance in combating terrorism.

Further evidence against Hassan includes videos he posted of himself driving while holding an ISIS flag and an open knife.

Hassan made his initial court appearance in the District of Minnesota today and was ordered to remain in custody pending a formal detention hearing.

The FBI is investigating the case with assistance from the Minneapolis Joint Terrorism Task Force. This case underscores the ongoing threat of domestic terrorism and the efforts of law enforcement to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations.
