The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into former FBI Director James Comey following allegations that he authorized a covert operation aimed at targeting Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The inquiry comes amid the agency’s recent leadership transition, with Kash Patel now at the helm.
According to a report by The Washington Times, an FBI whistleblower claimed that in 2015, Comey personally approved an operation involving two undercover female agents—referred to as “honeypots”—who were embedded at senior levels within Trump’s campaign. The agents were allegedly tasked with gathering damaging information by pretending to develop romantic or sexual relationships with campaign insiders.

“The case had no predicated foundation, so Comey personally directed the investigation without creating an official case file in Sentinel or any other FBI system,” the whistleblower stated, raising concerns about both the covert nature of the operation and the lack of proper documentation.
Under the new leadership of Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, the FBI is reportedly working to locate the former undercover agents involved in the operation. This investigation is the latest development in ongoing scrutiny of the FBI’s political investigations, which have been a flashpoint since the 2016 election.
The allegations contrast with the widely reported Crossfire Hurricane investigation, which focused on potential collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia. However, this new inquiry into Comey’s actions is stirring fresh controversy, particularly as it raises questions about accountability and the proper role of the FBI in political matters.
Comey had publicly expressed concerns about Trump’s potential reelection before the 2024 election, warning that the president’s stance toward government institutions could lead to significant changes in the way such agencies operate.
“Trump is coming for those institutions. He knows their power and I think he has regrets that he didn’t work hard enough to corrupt them last time. So he’s coming for them and that’s a danger for all Americans,” Comey stated during a 2019 interview on MSNBC.
Former FBI Director Christopher Wray, who took over after Comey’s departure on January 19, 2017, faced criticism from congressional Republicans for missing oversight hearings, a lapse later attributed to vacation time. The recent investigation into Comey’s alleged covert operation adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing debates over the FBI’s conduct and its political impartiality.

In a separate move, the Justice Department in February brought charges of “insubordination” against members of the FBI’s acting leadership over alleged misuse of law enforcement authority under the Biden administration. With Kash Patel now working closely with Attorney General Pam Bondi to address these issues, the investigation into Comey’s actions is expected to shed new light on the FBI’s internal processes and decision-making in politically sensitive cases.
