The White House announced on Friday a dramatic decline in illegal immigration, crediting President Donald J. Trump’s unprecedented efforts to secure the southern border. In a statement titled “When There Are No Illegal Immigrants, There Is No Need for Shelters,” the administration highlighted the sharp reduction in border crossings and the subsequent closure of migrant shelters across the country.
“Two years ago, U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered 1,500 illegal immigrants every day in the El Paso sector alone—now, they’re seeing roughly 80 per day,” the statement read. “President Trump’s policies have effectively ended the crisis at our southern border, and the results speak for themselves.”
The White House pointed to the closure of numerous migrant shelters as evidence of the administration’s success in curbing illegal immigration.

Organizations that once provided services to thousands of migrants are now scaling back operations or shutting down entirely due to the lack of demand.
- Catholic Charities in McAllen, Texas, reported seeing only “zero to three families” at their shelter and has cut staff in Dallas due to the reduced need.
- A Brownsville, Texas, facility closed its doors after a “sudden decrease in asylum seekers” over the past month.
- In El Paso, Texas, a migrant shelter network announced that just one or two of its 20 shelters will remain open.
- Pima County, Arizona, shut down two migrant shelters, citing the lack of demand following President Trump’s inauguration.
- In San Diego, California, a shelter “has not had a single migrant walk through its doors since President Trump took office” and has since closed altogether.
- In New York City, a network of shelters that once housed thousands of illegal immigrants has been shuttered.
- In northern Mexico, local news outlets reported that the flow of illegal immigrants seeking to enter the United States has “decreased enormously,” with facilities that once held thousands now seeing only a fraction of that number.
The White House attributed the decline in illegal immigration to President Trump’s robust border security policies, including the construction of the border wall, stricter enforcement of immigration laws, and agreements with Mexico and Central American countries to curb migrant flows.
The administration also highlighted the success of its “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires asylum seekers to wait outside the U.S. while their claims are processed.
“President Trump promised to secure the border, and he has delivered,” the statement continued. “When there are no illegal immigrants, there is no need for shelters. This is what success looks like.”

The White House’s announcement underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to border security and immigration enforcement. With illegal immigration at historic lows, the administration is now shifting its focus to maintaining these gains and addressing other priorities, such as reforming the legal immigration system and strengthening national security.
