Texas Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett sparked controversy during an appearance on The View on Wednesday when she attributed former President Donald Trump’s record-high approval ratings to a lack of education among Americans.

Crockett’s comments came in response to recent polling data showing Trump with a 53% approval rating, the highest of his presidency, with 70% of respondents believing he is fulfilling his promises and 45% calling for Democrats to adopt more moderate policies.

When asked about the polling numbers, Crockett did not hold back.

“My takeaway is just like the election—we’ve got to do better at education,” she said. “People don’t understand, but you will understand when those hospitals in rural America start closing down even more. You will understand when you don’t have your Social Security. And when your Medicaid and Medicare go away, you will understand. As planes continue to fall out of the sky, soon you will understand why it’s important to maybe have somebody that isn’t loud and ridiculous.”

Crockett went on to defend President Joe Biden, whom she referred to as “sleepy Joe,” suggesting that his quieter demeanor was preferable to Trump’s bombastic style. “Maybe sleepy Joe is what we wanted because we could at least sleep at night,” she added.

Crockett’s appearance on The View followed a fiery interview on CNN earlier this month, where she launched a scathing critique of Trump and his administration. During the February 4 interview, Crockett accused Trump of surrounding himself with “white supremacists” and criticized what she called the “coddling of mediocre white boys” in American politics.

One of her primary targets was Darren Beattie, a former Trump speechwriter who was fired in 2018 after it was revealed he had spoken at a conference attended by white nationalists. Beattie was recently appointed to a key State Department role as the acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.

“We right now have a white supremacist sitting in the White House,” Crockett said during the CNN interview. “He is backed up by other white supremacists. If you really want to know who the criminals are in this country, you can Google it. The people that commit 80 percent of the most violent crimes in this country are white supremacists, yet for whatever reason, they sit and serve at the pleasure of the president.”

Crockett also dismissed the notion that Trump’s past firing of Beattie absolved him of responsibility, pointing to Beattie’s recent social media posts, including one that stated, “Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work.”

As Vice Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee, Crockett has been a vocal advocate for increased accountability in government. During her CNN interview, she criticized Trump’s alleged misuse of emergency powers and the lack of oversight for special government employees.

“If your whole job is to figure out where we can cut money, then sit down and look at the budget line by line,” Crockett said. “But what we’re seeing is someone who is exceeding their scope of authority and causing harm. This is why we need oversight and accountability.”

Crockett concluded her remarks on CNN with a call to action, urging Americans to stand up against systemic racism and inequality. “We have to fight with the same energy they bring,” she said. “If they want to play ball, then I’m ready to play ball. We are not going to let them tear our democracy down.”
