A community and Sheriff’s office are mourning the loss of one of their own after an off-duty corrections deputy was fatally shot in an ambush on Monday night.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) Deputy Basil Powell, 39, was returning home just after 7:30 p.m. when he was targeted and shot, according to PBSO.
Deputies responded to reports of gunfire in a Belle Glade neighborhood and found Powell critically injured. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Powell had been with the sheriff’s office for three years, joining the agency in October 2021.
PBSO investigators believe Powell was targeted and ambushed, but they have not released any information about potential suspects. A procession was held Monday night to escort Powell’s body to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
PBSO is urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS. Sources and related content
