In a move to combat what he calls the infiltration of “woke” ideologies, President Donald Trump has ordered the dismissal of the boards of visitors overseeing the nation’s military academies.
The decision, announced Monday on Truth Social, targets the boards of West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy, signaling a dramatic shift in the administration’s approach to military leadership and culture.
“Our Service Academies have been infiltrated by Woke Leftist Ideologues over the last four years,” Trump declared. “I have ordered the immediate dismissal of the Board of Visitors for the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard. We will have the strongest Military in History, and that begins by appointing new individuals to these Boards. We must make the Military Academies GREAT AGAIN!”

The move aligns with Trump’s 2024 campaign promise to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from the armed forces, which he and his allies argue have undermined military readiness and recruitment. Among those affected by the shakeup is Retired Lt. Gen. Nadja West, a former West Point board member who has publicly advocated for diversity as a means to build a “harmonious community.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a staunch critic of progressive military policies, has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s efforts to roll back DEI programs and other initiatives introduced during the Biden administration. Hegseth has particularly opposed policies related to transgender service members and what he describes as the “politicization” of the military.
Critics of the Biden-era policies point to several controversial decisions that they claim have eroded military effectiveness. These include former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s investigations into alleged “extremism” within the ranks, which some argue unfairly targeted conservative service members. Additionally, the Navy’s 2023 Digital Ambassador program, which featured an active-duty sailor drag queen in a recruitment campaign, was swiftly discontinued after drawing widespread criticism.

A 2022 memorandum from Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman C.Q. Brown further fueled the debate, revealing that the Air Force was revising its racial and gender demographic goals for officer candidates to prioritize “diversity and inclusion.” A 2024 study by Arizona State University’s Center for American Institutions accused the Biden administration’s DEI programs of fostering an environment of “race and sex-based scapegoating and stereotyping,” potentially harming military cohesion and performance.
Trump’s decision to dismiss the boards of visitors is the latest in a series of actions aimed at reshaping the military’s leadership and culture. The move has sparked intense debate, with supporters applauding the administration’s efforts to restore what they see as traditional military values and critics warning of the potential consequences of politicizing the armed forces.

The Naval Academy declined to comment on the decision, while West Point and the Air Force Academy referred inquiries to the White House. The Coast Guard Academy and the White House have not yet responded to requests for comment.
As the administration moves forward with its plans to appoint new board members, the controversy underscores the broader ideological battle over the role of diversity and inclusion in the military.
