U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of Jorge Luis Sanchez-Luna, a 45-year-old Mexican national and registered sex offender, on February 4 in Newark, New Jersey. Sanchez-Luna was convicted of endangering the welfare of a child through sexual conduct by a caretaker, a crime that has drawn strong condemnation from law enforcement officials.

“Sanchez-Luna is a deviant criminal who has a record of repeat heinous offenses against a minor,” said Arthur J. Wilson Jr., Deputy Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Newark. “ERO Newark considers this insidious child abuse a danger to our communities and seeks justice for the traumatized victim.”

Sanchez-Luna entered the United States on October 29, 2015, as a lawful permanent resident. On July 12, 2024, he was convicted in the New Jersey Superior Court in Monmouth County for endangering the welfare of a child through sexual conduct by a caretaker. As part of his sentencing, Sanchez-Luna was placed under parole supervision for life and required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law, which mandates public notification of sex offenders living in the community.

Following his arrest, ICE issued Sanchez-Luna a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge. The proceedings will determine his immigration status and potential removal from the United States.

ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) unit, which carried out the arrest, is tasked with identifying and apprehending removable noncitizens, particularly those who pose a threat to public safety. Sanchez-Luna’s case highlights the agency’s focus on removing individuals convicted of serious crimes, including sexual offenses against children.

The arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by federal immigration authorities to collaborate with local law enforcement to ensure that individuals who commit egregious crimes are held accountable, regardless of their immigration status. ICE has emphasized its commitment to protecting communities from individuals who endanger public safety.

Sanchez-Luna’s case will now proceed through the immigration court system, where a judge will determine whether he will be deported to Mexico. The arrest has reignited discussions about the role of immigration enforcement in addressing criminal behavior and protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children.

As the legal process unfolds, ICE continues to urge community members to report suspicious activities and individuals who may pose a threat to public safety. The agency remains focused on its mission to enforce immigration laws while prioritizing the removal of those who commit serious crimes.
