Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism about striking a deal with former U.S. President Donald Trump to help end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, according to an interview with Reuters on Friday. Zelenskyy’s comments come as Trump, a leading contender for the 2024 U.S. presidential election, has repeatedly vowed to broker peace in global conflicts, contrasting his approach with the foreign policy of the Biden-Harris administration.

In the interview, Zelenskyy revealed that he is open to negotiating a deal with the U.S. that would involve Ukraine supplying rare earth minerals and other critical resources in exchange for continued financial and military support. Rare earth elements are essential for manufacturing high-tech devices, renewable energy technologies, and defense systems, making them a strategic asset for the U.S.

“These deposits are priceless, it is huge amounts of money, huge. That’s why we need to protect it,” Zelenskyy told Reuters. “If we are talking about a deal, then let’s do a deal, we are only for it.”

The Ukrainian president’s remarks highlight the growing pressure on Kyiv to secure long-term international support as the war with Russia approaches its third year. Ukraine has relied heavily on Western aid, particularly from the U.S., to sustain its defense efforts. However, political divisions in Washington and concerns over the allocation of resources have raised questions about the future of American assistance.

Trump, who has frequently criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the Ukraine conflict, has promised to bring an end to the war if re-elected. During his presidency, Trump sought to strengthen ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a stance that has drawn both praise and criticism. While some view Trump’s willingness to engage with Putin as a potential pathway to peace, others fear it could come at the expense of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Zelenskyy’s proposal to trade rare earth minerals for aid underscores Ukraine’s strategic importance as a global supplier of critical resources. The country is home to significant deposits of lithium, titanium, and other rare earth elements, which are increasingly in demand as nations transition to green energy and advanced technologies.

The potential deal could also signal a shift in Ukraine’s diplomatic strategy as it seeks to diversify its partnerships and secure sustainable support. However, the details of such an agreement remain unclear, and it is uncertain how Trump or other U.S. leaders would respond to Zelenskyy’s offer.

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations hangs in the balance. Zelenskyy’s openness to a deal with Trump reflects the high stakes for Ukraine as it continues to fight for its survival against Russian aggression.

For now, the prospect of a U.S.-Ukraine agreement remains speculative, but Zelenskyy’s comments have sparked a renewed debate about the role of diplomacy and resource-sharing in resolving one of the world’s most pressing conflicts.
