U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested Juan Misael Canales-Garcia, a 52-year-old Salvadoran national, following his release from the Alabama Department of Corrections. Canales-Garcia has a history of illegal entry into the United States and a criminal conviction for kidnapping and robbery.

Canales-Garcia was first ordered removed from the U.S. in 1992. Since then, he has re-entered and been removed from the country three additional times.

In 2005, he was arrested in Alabama for first-degree kidnapping and robbery and subsequently convicted, serving a combined 26 years in prison.

ICE had filed an immigration detainer with the Alabama Department of Corrections in December 2024. Following his release from prison on January 23rd, 2025, ICE reinstated his prior order of removal. He is currently in ICE custody pending removal to El Salvador.

This case highlights ICE’s ongoing efforts to prioritize public safety and enforce immigration laws, particularly for individuals who pose a threat to communities.
