A bill that would prevent the development of golf courses, pickleball courts, and lodges in Florida’s state parks is scheduled for a hearing next week in the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

The bill (SB 80), filed by Senator Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, follows a controversy last year over the Department of Environmental Protection’s “Great Outdoors Initiative.”

The initiative proposed adding amenities like golf courses and lodges to several state parks, drawing significant bipartisan opposition.

Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration ultimately paused the initiative due to the backlash. Senator Harrell’s bill, along with an identical bill (HB 209) filed in the House by Representative John Snyder, R-Stuart, aims to permanently prevent such development in state parks.

The bills, titled the “State Park Preservation Act,” are scheduled for discussion as lawmakers prepare for the upcoming legislative session, which begins March 4th.
