A group of prominent legal professionals and democracy advocates has issued a stern warning to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI, condemning the reported termination of career law enforcement officials involved in investigations related to former President Donald Trump.

In a letter addressed to Acting Deputy Attorney General at the DOJ, attorneys Mark S. Zaid, former Ambassador Norman Eisen, and Judge Nancy Gertner expressed concerns over the alleged mass firings of FBI agents who played roles in the January 6th investigation and the search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.

According to the letter, credible reports suggest that the DOJ has ordered the systematic termination of all FBI employees who had any involvement in key investigations related to Trump. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot
  • The lawful search and seizure of classified documents from Mar-a-Lago
  • Other undisclosed investigations related to the former president

The attorneys argue that publicly exposing the identities of terminated FBI employees would pose an immediate threat to their safety and security, warning that these individuals could become targets of:

  • Doxxing (public release of personal information online)
  • Swatting (false emergency reports leading to armed police responses)
  • Harassment and potential violence

The letter also stresses that many of these FBI agents have spent decades investigating dangerous criminals, meaning their exposure could put them and their families at severe risk.

“This course of action is a direct assault on the national security of the American citizens you have sworn to faithfully and unselfishly serve,” the letter states.

Beyond safety concerns, the legal team is accusing the DOJ of violating due process protections, asserting that the terminations appear to be politically motivated rather than legally justified. They highlight that:

  • FBI employees have constitutional and statutory rights
  • Terminations must follow due process, including a written proposal of disciplinary action, the right to respond, and appeal procedures
  • The DOJ’s actions could violate the Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. § 552a) if the agency publicly releases the names of fired employees

These concerns come amid a broader shake-up within federal agencies under President Donald Trump’s new administration, which has vowed to clean house of officials linked to investigations into his past conduct.

Critics argue that this mass firing amounts to political retaliation, targeting public servants who acted in accordance with their legal duties.

“The public servants the Department is seeking to remove properly fulfilled their oath to uphold and defend the rule of law,” the letter asserts.

The authors of the letter demand that the DOJ reverse course and refrain from any public disclosure of names, warning that they are prepared to pursue legal action if the department proceeds with the terminations.
