MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A routine morning took an unexpected turn for residents of the Pirates Cove subdivision in Key Largo when they discovered a large alligator taking a dip in their backyard pool. Fortunately, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant James Hager was on hand to assist with the removal of the unwelcome guest.

The incident occurred Friday morning near Mile Marker 98. Sergeant Hager, responding to the residents’ call, helped safely remove the alligator from the pool area. The gator then relocated on its own.

Alligators are an integral part of Florida’s ecosystem, but it’s crucial to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines to minimize the risk of negative encounters. The FWC offers the following advice:

  • Never feed alligators: Feeding alligators is illegal and can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans, leading to more frequent interactions.
  • Keep a safe distance: Observe alligators from a distance and never approach them.
  • Swim only in designated areas: Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Avoid swimming outside of designated swimming areas and during these times.
  • Keep pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge: Pets can resemble alligators’ natural prey.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Alligators can be found in any body of water, including lakes, rivers, canals, and even retention ponds.

If you encounter an alligator that poses a threat to people, pets, or property, contact the FWC’s Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
