Prescribed fire is a carefully planned and controlled burn used to manage and improve ecosystems. By mimicking natural fire cycles, prescribed burns help:
- Restore and maintain fire-dependent ecosystems: Many plant and animal species thrive in fire-adapted environments.
- Enhance forest health: Reduces the buildup of flammable materials, promoting new growth and improving wildlife habitat.
- Reduce wildfire risk: By clearing out underbrush and debris, prescribed fires help prevent larger, uncontrolled wildfires.
Hillsborough County’s Conservation & Environmental Lands Management department conducts numerous prescribed fires each year to manage over 64,000 acres of environmentally sensitive areas.
